One angry commuter posted evidence of a trip to the airport from the city's central business district.

The receipt from the ride-sharing app shows the passenger was slugged with a price surge of almost four times the normal rate.

The final bill came to $275.65 for the trip, made early on Friday morning while Melbourne was being hit by heavy rain.

Uber's quadrupling of prices for people desperate to get to the airport on time has provoked outrage and calls for government intervention.

'I just saw $300 to go from Melbourne CBD to the airport,' said one Twitter user.

'These surges should be outlawed. Just preying on people in times of need.'
