Thousands hit Oxford Street for first big Christmas shop 


With just over three weeks to go until Christmas, shoppers have showed out in force to start buying gifts for their loved ones.

Thousands descended on Oxford Street in London for West End shopping to kick off the first weekend of December.

Twitter user @Sonic_Screwup branded shopping on the heaving London street a 'f****** nightmare' and asked: 'Why aren't you all on Amazon?' 

Home to a House of Fraser, John Lewis and Debenhams, the street's festive opening times will see stores open as late as 10pm on Thursdays and 9pm on every day other than Sunday, when 6pm will be the usual closing time.

Shoppers also hit the high street in Manchester to enjoy the city's famous German Christmas markets, but not everyone was filled with festive cheer.

Tweeting under @_rlsage one consumer branded her idea to shop in the city on Saturday the 'WORST decision' while @bernalismorex wrote: 'Never go to Manchester on a Saturday to do your Christmas shopping. Jesus Christ I’d rather the ground had just swallowed me up.'
