Victorian Police officer kicked during Highpoint arrest

Confronting pictures have emerged of the injuries suffered by a police officer who was reportedly kicked in the head on Boxing Day.

The officer, 25, was making a shoplifting arrest at the Highpoint Shopping Centre in Maribyrnong, in Melbourne's inner west, when he was allegedly attacked.

The accused - a 17-year-old with a history of serious crimes - was granted bail on Tuesday despite being on 12-months' probation.

Police Association secretary Wayne Gatt said the decision sent the wrong message, and put a target on the backs of officers, The Herald Sun reported. 

'This is what disrespect looks like, for our police, for our law and for the community,' he said.

'It's akin to giving a green light to crime in Victoria. Which of our members will be next?'

'Who will have the target on their back tomorrow? If you don't protect your police, what hope has the community got? This simply has to stop.'
