Hertfordshire man dives into freezing pond and rescues trapped dog

This is the amazing moment a man dived into a freezing pond to rescue a trapped dog.

The man, named Jake, was waiting for his meal at a Harvester in Oakmere Park, Potters Bar, Hertfordshire, when he spotted the trapped dog. 

He ignored all safety and weather warnings and sprinted outside before leaping into the icy water and swimming over to the animal. 

Steven Cooper, 50, was with his wife Julie near the pond at around 3.30pm and managed to film the dramatic rescue.

The footage shows Jake swimming towards the flailing dog, a terrier named Heidi,  before picking her up and helping her paddle to safety.

Mr Cooper told the Mirror Online: 'It was really emotional - I almost burst into tears when the man brought the dog to safety.'

He went on to explain just how thin the ice was and how a group of people, including Heidi's terrified owner, stood on the edge of the pond calling out to the dog.

The pond measures about 70 yards across and Mr Cooper said all that the onlookers could do was shout and try and encourage Heidi to swim towards them.
