Devout Mexican Catholics whipped each other in the streets on Easter Sunday in a  bizarre twist on a festival dating back to the 16th century.

While usually the hardcore faithful flagellate themselves as an act of penitence as sinners and to mark the suffering of Christ, a small number today decided to whip each other. 

Worshippers in the town of Soltepec marched through the streets as part of a centuries old tradition supposed to rid the body of sin.
