Prince Charles has voiced his support for Australia claiming autonomy from the British monarchy and becoming its own republic, according to former prime minister Paul Keating.

Keating claims to have raised the issue of Australia's constitutional future with Charles, with the prince allegedly expressing the view that Australia was logically destined for independence, The Australian reports.

'I have no doubt he believes Australia should be free of the British monarchy and that it should make its own way in the world,' said the former Labor prime minister.
