An undercover police car filled with ammunition burst into flames on a busy motorway on Sunday night.

Four officers from a specialist unit were rushing to a job when their unmarked Kia Sorento had engine trouble.

They escaped before it burst into flames on the side of the M7 in west Sydney. Dramatic pictures show the car ablaze as firemen battled the flames from behind a shield in case the ammunition exploded.

Police are now investigating the cause of the fire.
