With the footy season fully into gear, Daily Mail Australia has compiled a complete A-Z guide of some of the biggest scandals to hit rugby league, union and even soccer.

Included in the list are superstar NRL players who embarrassed themselves on a night out on the drink, footballers who had affairs with teammates wives, and transgressions so serious they resulted in jail time and the threat of deportation.

Bosnich played for , Aston Villa and Chelsea before he failed a drug test in 2003 and had his $115,000-a-week contract torn up.

He later alleged his model ex-girlfriend Sophie Anderton was a 'honeytrap' introduced to him by a gang who wanted to destroy him. 

He began using cocaine heavily after his football career ended, even pulling a gun on his own father, thinking he was a burglar.

Bosnich was also heavily criticised for performing a Nazi salute while playing for Aston Villa against Tottenham Hotspur, a club with a large Jewish following.

C: The Canterbury Bulldogs won the premiership in 2004 but the season was overshadowed by shocking gang rape allegations made by a 20-year-old woman.

The woman claimed at least six players raped her in a resort pool at Coffs Harbour, New South Wales during a pre-season camp.

It was the second year in a row that some Bulldogs players faced rape allegations stemming from incidents at the same resort.

Bulldogs team members admitted group sex and wild parties took place during their stay at Coffs Harbour, but said the behaviour was consensual.

'Some of the boys love a "bun",' one player said. 'Gang banging is nothing new for our club or the rugby league'.

E: Former rugby league golden boy Andrew Ettingshausen had a year-long affair with the wife of his former teammate Paul Mellor.

Ettingshausen spent 15 months undergoing psychiatric treatment after the affair, which he blamed on depression.

His wife Monique stood by him despite his extra-marital affair with Ali Mellor.

'I am going to spend the rest of my life trying to win Monique's love back,' he said in an emotional interview after the scandal became public.

In 2000, Fittler was found unconscious lying outside the Glebe police station, the day after being named Australian captain.

He had been drinking on a harbour cruise with his Roosters teammates before he ended up at the police station.

Fittler was described by one witness as being 'the drunkest human being ever'.

Nine years later as coach of the Roosters he tried to gain access to the wrong hotel room while half-naked and drunk in Townsville.

Police were called to the Holiday Inn early on a Friday morning after two female guests reported a 'creepy man' with a 'hairy chest' trying to enter their room.

Fittler fined himself $10,000 and made a public apology. He was eventually sacked as Roosters coach.

L: The L'Arc nightclub in Paris was the scene of a drugs sting carried out by French police which resulted in former Wallaby James O'Connor and his teammate All Black Ali Williams being arrested on cocaine charges in 2017. O'Connor was fined by the court for using the drug, but not possessing it or purchasing it.

O'Connor escaped major sanctions but was forced to attend behavioural awareness training. Williams was fined 1500 euros ($2000) by league headquarters. He was earlier sacked by his club Racing 92.
