Labor pledges to end $800 million live export industry if elected

Federal Labor will end the live sheep trade if it wins government, with a plan to transition the industry to meat processing.

The party announced its intention on Thursday after heated protests around the country.

The industry, worth more than $800 million annually, is under pressure after shocking footage emerged of 2,400 sheep dying in heat and filth on an Emanuel Exports ship bound for the Middle East in August.

Footage of the animals was taken by a whistleblower and revealed in April, prompting calls for the trade to be ended.

Animal welfare groups have offered $1 million for sheep farmers if the Turnbull government agrees to phase out live exports.
