A man faces a jail sentence for a sickening attack on a defenceless guide dog puppy.

The 44-year-old from Malvern East in Melbourne allegedly kicked the one-year-old dog in the stomach 'with considerable force', the Herald Sun reported.

The dog yelped and whimpered after the random attack on Chapel Street in Prahran.

The puppy was waiting with its handler on Chapel Street outside a shop when the attack occurred.

It was taken to a veterinarian for assessment.

The man faces a year-long jail term, and a fine of up to $19,000.
