Ruth Davidson returns to action at Scottish parliament after revealing pregnancy

Ruth Davidson returned to action in the Scottish parliament today - a week after revealing she is pregnant with her first child.

The Tory leader in Scotland faced off against Nicola Sturgeon at First Minister's Questions - and showed no sign of the morning sickness she has been enduring.

The 39-year-old - often tipped as a possible successor to Theresa May - announced last Thursday that she partner Jen Wilson would be welcoming their baby in the autumn after undergoing IVF.

She posted a photo on Twitter of the couple beaming alongside their cocker spaniel, Wilson, with the message: 'Our little family of three is becoming four...'

There was no sign of Ms Davidson taking it easy today, as she berated Ms Sturgeon over criminals not being prosecuted because 'overworked' police officers had failed to submit key reports in time.

'When action is dropped against hundreds of suspects in cases as serious as these, and it is all down to officers being overworked, under pressure and flooded with paperwork, then it is clear something is very wrong,' she said.

Ms Sturgeon said it was 'regrettable' that there were cases where there had been delays in getting the necessary paperwork to the Crown Office - but stressed this had happened in just 0.3 per cent of all cases.

Speaking on Scottish TV last week, Ms Davidson told of the 'ups and downs' of having IVF and her joy that her dream of starting a family is coming true.

She said: 'Jen and I are delighted to say we are going to be starting a family. I'm pregnant, I'm due in the late autumn.

'We weren't sure it was every going to happen for us but we are really really happy that it has.'

On having IVF, she added: 'I think for lots of couples in Scotland that do opt for that route - there are ups and downs but we are just delighted it has been successful.'
