British tourist drowned after falling into a canal in Amsterdam

The 21-year-old British man who died after falling into a canal in Amsterdam this weekend has been named as a talented footballer from County Durham.

Daniel Sirrell, from Peterlee, reportedly lost his balance and fell into the water in the early hours of Sunday morning, and despite efforts to resuscitate him, his life could not be saved.

Mr Sirrell's partner and friends have today paid tribute to 'one of the happiest young lads around' as they try to raise the funds needed to be able to bring his body back to the UK.

Mr Sirrell had been on a holiday in the Dutch city with five of his friends when the tragic incident occurred.

Eyewitnesses said they saw Mr Sirrell walk to the side of one of Amsterdam's many canals 'in the middle of the night' and begin urinating into the water before losing his balance.

One passerby reportedly jumped into the canal to try to save him, but was not able to pull him to dry land.

Emergency services were called to the scene and a special diving team eventually managed to pull him out of the water.

Paramedics reportedly managed to briefly resuscitate him, but he later died in hospital.
