Carol Voderman, 58, was a mathematician on the Channel 4 show, Countdown alongside former host Richard Whiteley, who died in 2005. The maths whizz has now learned of the death of another former colleague on the show on Twitter. The presenter had asked her 386,000 Twitter followers of a particular song she wanted the name of to which one social media user replied: “Give Me The Night by George Benson.” But the Twitter user then informed the Countdown star of her colleague’s death when they wrote: “Carol I used to work with your colleague Richard Samson. Lovely, clever man. Died at 46. Give up smoking everyone!”

Carol responded to the social media user: “I didn’t know he’d passed away…Tall Richard? Richard Dictionary Corner Richard?”

To which the Twitter user informed the Countdown star it was indeed the same Richard who he said had emigrated to Australia and was “very fond” of Carol.

The former Countdown star replied: “That’s made me very sad. Nobody told me. I liked Richard Samson a lot… Richard Whiteley did too.”

Richard Samson was a lexicographer who first appeared on Countdown in 1990 making several appearances in the Dictionary Corner.
