Vegans can rejoice as everyone’s favourite high street bakery Greggs is launching a vegan-friendly version of its famous sausage roll. Greggs’ best selling item is its sausage roll, selling on average 1.5 million of them every week. The UK has seen an influx of veganism in recent years, with a record number of people signing up for Veganuary this New Year. More than 250,000 people have signed up for veganism for the New Year and 140,000 people alone pledged to go vegan for the first month of 2019.

Greggs’ vegan sausage roll has been created to mirror some of their best seller’s classic features, including 96 layers of light and crisp puff pastry.

However, the filling is instead made with a bespoke Quorn filling.

The pastry is even vegan-friendly too, with a Greggs spokesperson telling Express.co.uk: "We have removed the milk-based glaze, used to help make the pastry of our original sausage roll golden once baked. 

"We made a conscious decision to leave the Vegan Sausage Roll without a glaze, making the lattice design more prominent and allowing a clearer difference between the two sausage rolls."

The vegan sausage roll will hit shelves tomorrow (Thursday 3rd January) in selected stores across the nation.
