If you overindulged on turkey and pigs in blankets this Christmas and plan to cut down on meat in the new year, you’ll be pleased to know the largest bakery chain in the UK is launching a vegan sausage roll on January 3. The new item coincides with Veganuary, a movement which encourages people to embrace plant-based diets during January. The vegan sausage roll will still be similar to the classic meat-filled treat, as the puff pastry will just be cooked in vegetable oil and will be filled with quorn rather than pork.

But meat fans will still be able to purchase traditional sausage rolls, as Greggs sells at least 1.5 million every week. 

Roger Whiteside, the chief executive of Greggs, explained the bakery has been trying to develop a vegan version of the most popular product for a while, in the hope of enticing new customers who do not eat meat. 

He said:“Like many food retailers we have seen increasing demand for vegetarian and vegan products.

“We have been trying to develop a vegan version of our famous sausage roll for some time now.

“It has not been easy but our taste panel customers all love this one, so we have decided to launch it as our contribution to Veganuary.”

Last year, the international animal rights group PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) started a petition calling for a vegan option on the menu.
