The House of Lords currently has around 800 members. These can claim £305 for turning up each day, regardless of whether they do any work. Currently the Lords is the second largest legislative assembly in the world, behind only China’s National People’s Congress.
Speaking to The Guardian Lord Fowler commented: “The last thing we want in the House of Lords is passengers.
“You do have extraordinary cases where people have come in and after a few days they’ve come to the conclusion that, actually they’re in the wrong place doing the wrong thing, or rather not doing the wrong thing.”
There is no official limit to how many people can be appointed to the House of Lords.
