Surviving R Kelly began today (Friday, January 5) on Lifetime in the US and will air over the next three nights. Lifetime has made the documentary available to watch online in the US. The documentary recounts numerous stories of alleged sexual abuse by R Kelly against the late R&B singer Aaliyah and other women - all of which he denies. Surviving R Kelly is currently not available to watch online in the UK, though Lifetime has put a number of clips from the series on their YouTube channel. Episodes will be available to watch online shortly after broadcast on Thursday, January 4, Friday, January 5 and Saturday, January 6 for viewers with selected cable packages. However, there are currently no plans to bring the series to UK screens, making it difficult to watch in the UK. Although Netflix has hosted previous Lifetime series like You, the streaming service has not revealed any plans to make Surviving R Kelly available to stream. The most recent of these is by former girlfriend Lisa VanAllen, who talks of alleged controlling behaviour by the singer when she dated him. Another clip sees former R Kelly protégée Sparkle makes similar claims, while a third sees Lizzette Martinez talk about meeting the singer when she was 17. The official synopsis for Surviving R Kelly reads: “Women emerge from the shadows and unite their voices to share their stories.” The documentary series features over 50 interviews, including a number of women who allege to have seen R Kelly committing or have been victims of sexual and physical abuse. R Kelly has denied all of these allegations and his lawyer released a statement prior to the broadcast of the first episode of the show threatening legal action against Lifetime if they decided to air the special. Aaliyah’s mother Diane Haughton has also released a statement denying the claim made in Surviving R Kelly episode one by the star's former backup singer Jovante Cunningham, who says she saw the singer have sex with Aaliyah when she was underage. However, the documentary does not feature interviews with a number of former R Kelly collaborators, who reportedly declined to appear on the documentary.
