Just a handful of this snack could lower your risk of deadly high blood pressure

High blood pressure is a common condition that affects more than 25 per cent of all adults in the UK. The condition, which is also known as hypertension, puts extra stress on blood vessels and vital organs. Left untreated, high blood pressure could develop into a deadly heart attack or stroke. But, eating a handful of sunflower seeds every day could help to avoid hypertension, it’s been claimed.

Sunflower seeds are a great source of magnesium, which may reduce your blood pressure, said nutritionist Joy Bauer.

Magnesium works by dilating blood vessels, and subsequently easing the flow of blood through the blood vessels.

A handful of sunflower seeds could be enough to lower blood pressure - the equivalent to about 80g.

“Control your blood pressure by maintaining a healthy weight, limiting your salt intake, and eating heart-healthy foods,” said Bauer, on her website.
