A Series of Unfortunate Events’ ending explained a number of the show’s central mysteries, like what exactly was in the mysterious sugar bowl. The A Series of Unfortunate Events ending also revealed the fate of Count Olaf (played by Neil Patrick Harris) and the three Baudelaire children on the Netflix show.

In the final episode of A Series of Unfortunate Events, titled The End, Olaf, Violet (Malina Weissman), Klaus (Louis Hynes) and Sunny Baudelaire (Presley Smith) found themselves shipwrecked on an island shaped like the Voluntary Fire Department (VFD) logo.

There, they are met by Ishmael (Peter MacNicol), who locks Olaf in a cage on the seawall after he attempts a coup against him.

On this island, order is maintained by getting the subjects to drink a fermented coconut milk cordial that makes the islanders literally forget their troubles.

One day, they follow Ishmael out of his tent to the other side of the island, where they discover a house within a tree as well as hundreds of items that have washed onto the shore of the island over the years.

When quizzed, Ishamael reveals he is the founder of the VFD and the former principal of the Prufrock Preparatory School, which he had been using as a recruiting base for the VFD.
