Germany volcano ALERT: Earthquakes spark fears of MAGMA rising

Deep and low-frequency earthquakes have been detected for the first time under the dormant Eifel volcano in North Rhine-Westphalia, a new paper show. As similar tremors are commonly regarded as indicators of the movement of magma at great depths, this discovery suggests magmatic fluids from the upper mantle of the Earth could rise into its crust under East Eifel. The Seismological Survey of Southwest Germany conducted the groundbreaking study together with GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and the Seismological Survey of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Professor Joachim Ritter of the Geophysical Institute (GPI) at KIT said: "The detected earthquakes are generated at large depths and are characterised by unusually low frequencies.

“Their magnitudes are below the limit of human perception.”

These deep low-frequency earthquakes are generated at depths between 10 and over 40 kilometres - where the Earth’s crust and mantle are located.
