Mr Grimes, 25, founded campaign group BeLeave when he was 22 to push for Brexit during the 2016 EU referendum. It quickly developed into one of the main Leave backing youth groups. Speaking to Express.co.uk he commented: “If we fail to deliver Brexit we fail to deliver democracy itself.
“I think it would be incredibly damaging and cause an upset that we’ve not seen in this country before.
“How can we turn around to other countries around the world and lecture them about their lack of democracy, their lack of openness, and then overturn our countries biggest ever vote in which millions of people decided to vote for the first time? That would be incredibly damaging.”
Mr Grimes argued there is a clear democratic mandate for Brexit, not just because of the 2016 referendum but also because of the General Elections in 2015 and 2017.
He noted that in 2015 the public elected a party to Government which had a manifesto commitment to hold a referendum on the UK’s EU membership.
Then in 2017 the vast majority of MPs elected were from the Conservative and Labour parties, both of which vowed to deliver Brexit.
