Royal tradition has previously dictated other members of the Royal Family and courtiers are chosen as godparents. There is also no limit to how many godparents a new addition to the family receives. Prince Charles has eight, including his grandfather King George VI.
Robert Jobson explained to ABC News: “There’s a feeling that because of their role as members of the Royal Family that they need as many confidants as they can get apart from their parents.”
Kate Middleton and Prince William chose distant relatives to be the godparents of their three children, George, Charlotte and Louis.
This includes Laura Fellowes, who is Princess Diana’s niece, and Zara Tindall, who is William’s cousin.
This means Kate may not play a big part in her sister-in-law’s baby’s christening, as she is too closely related to the Sussex family.
