Iain Duncan Smith claimed the Prime Minister’s Brexit defeat was a result of anger at the backstop element within the Withdrawal Agreement. The former Conservative Party leader claimed the “the problem” the European Union now faces is that the backstop element “caused most of the reality of the vote last night”. The Brexiteer predicted that the European Union would come back to the table and there would be “movement” from the bloc.
He said: “What happened last night was a general rejection of the arrangement that the Prime Minister has come up with.
“I think the key element from her is that she knows if she wants to get a deal through, there have to be some changes to that arrangement that she has got at the moment.
“If you look carefully at what is being said, even Monsieur Barnier made a point that the backstop, he said, had to be credible.
“Well, I saw and met with Monsieur Barnier and Sabine Weyand and their team and we gave them what essentially what they asked for which was a protocol which would have replaced the existing backstop and become the backstop and they are still sitting on that.”
