Stargazers in North America and Central America will have the best view of the moon on Sunday night. But people in South America and Western Europe can see the spectacle in the early hours on Monday. Fred Espenak, a retired NASA astrophysicist, said: "It's perfectly placed for the Americas and Western Europe, and we will see the entire event from start to finish."

The spectacular sight will start on January 20 at 10.30pm GMT.
The Earth’s shadow will start to move over the lunar surface at this point.
Totality, which is the point when the sun, moon and Earth are all aligned and Earth’s shadow will cover the whole disk of the moon, will then take place at 12.12am ET (5.12am GMT) on January 21.
