The majority of the UK is covered by an ice warning, with an additional snow warning for northern Scotland. Poor conditions are expected to disrupt journeys by road and rail. Temperatures will be warmer in southern England, parts of which are forecast to dodge the ice.
Met Office metrologist Alex Deakin explained: “More wintery weather has arrived after a pretty mild first half of the season.
“It is cold out there Thursday morning with an extensive frost and we do have some hazard warnings in force for ice across large parts of the UK.
“Snow and ice will hit northern Scotland and last well into the morning.”
A Met Office ice warning is in force for Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and England except the south-east and Cornwall.
It says we should expect “some injuries from slips and falls on icy surface” and “ice on some untreated roads”.
