Brave divers predict the huge creature, believed to be called Deep Blue, was around six metres long, weighing around two and a half tonnes. Incredible images of the shark, aged around 50 years old, were captured by local conservationist Ocean Ramsey, who had been out diving with her shark group One Ocean Diving. Researchers say the fish was originally tagged about 20 years ago when the great white shark was given its nautical name.
Local reporter Lynn Kawano said on Twitter: "We're gonna need a bigger boat.
"Deep Blue, biggest great white in the world."
Describing her encounter, Ms Ramsey told the Honolulu Star Advertiser she had been filming tiger sharks feeding on a whale when out of nowhere the massive beast arrived.
She said: "We saw a few tigers and then she came up and all the other sharks split, and she started brushing up against the boat.
