Britons will have to bare the bitterly cold weather for some time as temperatures plummet across the UK.

In some regions, the heat value is expected to fall to a staggering -10 degrees Celsius following the arrival of Arctic air.

Also, there is going to be some sleet and snow over the hills, as well as a few outbreaks of rain and grey clouds.

Meteorologist Matt Terry issued an ice warning on BBC Breakfast after explaining how temperatures had drastically fallen.

He said: “A few showers overnight means icy conditions down coastal counties of England. Bright start to the east but lost of cloud in the west.”

This morning there is widespread frost in Scotland and England, with temperatures down to minus seven degrees Celsius.

Elsewhere, there will be some icy patches following the early showers on Friday morning.

Today, a band of cloud travelling across Northern Ireland and into western parts of England, Wales and Scotland is expected to bring more rain, sleet and snow.
