In a hard-hitting speech Paschal Donohoe, the Irish minister for finance, said the growing movement risked “poisoning” the political stratosphere and he pointed the finger firmly at Brexit as a contributing factor. At a speech in the Irish capital on January 17, Mr Donohoe emphasised that political visions in Ireland were currently less divisive and had not yet threatened the status-quo. Mr Donohoe said Ireland is “deeply fortunate to have only a few minority viewpoints that echo the worst of the dangers and difficulties we’re seeing elsewhere”.
He added: “But we shouldn’t comfort ourselves with this continually. We shouldn’t believe that we can be immune to this kind of risk.”
The minister criticised the movement describing it as a “betrayal” by indicating it makes society more divided.
He added: “The new narrative that could develop on foot of this double dip is one of betrayal. And in the process, the well of public debate and political engagement becomes ever more challenging and potentially poisoned.”
