#AntiquesRoadshow: books hold ENORMOUS value - do you have one at ...

Tonight’s Antiques Roadshow saw Fiona and the team at Crathes Castle in Aberdeenshire and included signed Harry Potter books and ornate silver from Iona.

There are also treasures from around the world, including a German art deco figurine, an intricate Italian bracelet and a unique Brooklyn Dodgers baseball with a value as extraordinary as its story.

However, the real unexpected valuation tonight was on two Harry Potter books, only one of which was a first edition.

Valuation expert Justin Croft was on hand to deliver the news about the two novels.

Harry Potter book owner

Looking at the relatively recent books on the antiques programme, Justin said: “You’ve brought me two Harry Potter’s. One is a Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, and the other is a Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

“Okay, now, what’s exciting to me - this one has an inscription in it.

“It says, I think, ‘To the Pope family, with many thanks for introducing Harry to so many people, J.K. Rowling’.”

Noting how the book wasn’t in new condition, Justin teased viewers into believing it wouldn’t be worth much.

He continued: “Okay, that’s a good start. Now this one isn’t a first edition.

“It’s dated 1997, it’s paperback, but it’s not one of the incredibly rare first editions. It’s also quite a well-read copy, isn’t it?”

Moving on to the second book, the collector’s copy of the Chamber of Secrets was a first edition.

He smiled: “So, no, this is a first edition. This is the Chamber of Secrets. And again, here we go, another inscription.
