Martin Luther King Jr – who would have celebrated his 90th birthday on January 15 – was an American activist who became the most visible spokesperson and leader of the civil rights movement in the US from 1954 until his assassination in 1968. Dr King was shot and killed while standing on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 4. For more than 50 years, the FBI has maintained that James Earl Ray was the lone gunman who assassinated Dr King.
