The Argentine striker was accompanied only by the plane’s pilot. Five planes and two lifeboats searched more than 1000 square miles for the Piper Malibu plane on Monday after it vanished from radar en route from Nantes, France to Cardiff. A further 15-hour search took place yesterday, but rescue crews found no trace of the aircraft or its passengers.
Guernsey police said the chances of the footballer and the pilot surviving were “slim”.
Cardiff City FC’s chief executive Ken Choo said everyone at the club is in “shock”.
He said: “We expected Emiliano to arrive last night into Cardiff and today was due to be his first day with the team.
“Our owner, Tan Sri Vincent Tan, and chairman, Mehmet Dalman, are all very distressed about the situation.”
