Ms Abbott joined the body after Kate Osamor was forced to step down. The former Shadow Minister was embroiled in controversy following her son’s drug conviction. It emerged Ms Osamor wrote to the judge ahead of the sentencing, despite later claiming she was unaware of the case at that time.
According to the Labour Party rulebook three frontbencher’s should sit on the NEC, to be selected by the Shadow Cabinet.
However two shadow cabinet members told PoliticsHome.com they did not know about the appointment until it was announced.
Speaking to the website a Party source said: “This exposes the sham of Labour party democracy.
“If Jeremy cannot consult the Shadow Cabinet about using their constitutional powers, what chance have the membership got in being listened to on Brexit.”
