Brexit news: Germany has called for the EU to give the UK more time (Image: GETTY )
Peter Altmaier, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, said EU chiefs should “consider seriously” any request from Prime Minister Theresa May to extend Article 50. He warned Britain crashing out of the EU without a deal would not only “damage the vital interests of the British people” but the “economy in wider Europe."
He said: "There is not a lot of time left till March 29th. If the British wanted it, they should receive an extension to clarify the positions. If this helps to avoid a no-deal, this is an important signal for the growth forces in Europe.
“While it may prolong the debate, it may be the only way out of the current situation."
Speaking directly to Brussels bosses he added: ”You have to think about it very seriously.
“No deal Brexit must be avoided. This is the priority, the key priority."
