BBC Question Time: Richard Burgon quizzed over Maduro support (Image: BBC)
The MP for Leeds East faced a barrage of questions from not only Fiona Bruce but also other panellists towards the end of the programme. Mr Burgon repeatedly avoided answering whether he regrets his party’s support for Maduro. Instead of clarifying his position or if he regrets his party’s support of the current president, Mr Burgon instead drew parallels to the invasion of Iraq which he argued was purely to exploit the country’s oil reserves.
Mr Burgon said: “I think what we need is a negotiated outcome.
“The Vatican has offered to mediate between the two countries Mexico has offered get involved unmediated peace talks as has Uruguay.
“I’m very uncomfortable with Donald Trump and the new far-right leader of Brazil plucking an opposition leader out and declaring them president.
“This could lead to a civil war in Venezuela.”
