Back in 2015 when Disney released their first Star Wars movie in The Force Awakens, the film was criticised by some fans for being too similar to A New Hope. Nevertheless, the JJ Abrams’ effort was generally warmly received after playing it quite safe. But when Rian Johnson took over the story with The Last Jedi, there was huge backlash especially surrounding how the director handled various story arcs set up by Abrams. Who can forget grumpy Luke, Rey’s parents being nobodies and Snoke cut in two halfway through the movie?

While The Last Jedi, The Force Awakens and Rogue One all safely made over $1 billion each at the box office, the next summer saw Solo flop on just $392 million worldwide.

Some fans may interpret this as part of The Last Jedi backlash against Disney’s handling of the beloved franchise.

And that certainly seems to be the case with Star Wars theorist Mike Zeroh.

He reckons Lucasfilm will now play it safe and use Star Wars Episode IX as a course correction for the franchise.
