An earthquake has struck off Sumatra island in Indonesia (Image: EXPRESS) The 6.1 magnitude earthquake hit near Sumatra island at a depth of 10km on Saturday. There were no immediate reports of damage and no potential for a tsunami, according to Indonesia's National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB). The quake struck near South Pagai, one of the Mentawai Islands off the west coast of Sumatra in Indonesia. And in 2007, the Sumatra earthquakes struck near the island. Indonesia sits on the Ring of Fire area in the Pacific Ocean where the majority of the world’s earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur. It comes after a powerful quake rocked Mexico’s southern state of Chiapas yesterday, which was felt as far away as El Salvador. An official in Chiapas said that he felt the quake but that he did not see any immediate damage. The epicentre of the quake hit at a depth of 68 km near the Pacific coast and Mexico's border with Guatemala, according to the USGS. The earthquake caused some people to leave office buildings and gather in the street in the country’s capital Mexico City. There were no immediate reports of major damage in Mexico City.
