European Research Group leader Jacob Rees-Mogg explained to a caller on LBC that if Britain had made it clear to the EU from “day one’ in June 2016 that the UK was planning for no deal the EU would have offered a better deal. Mr Rees-Mogg was confident that quickly starting preparations for no deal would have forced the EU to take threats more seriously. “And we want to have a functioning Conservative government which we believe is in the national interest.
“If we can unite the party, have a strong government and leave the European Union that would be a satisfying outcome.
“But if by accident we leave without a deal because Theresa May doesn’t run with this or the EU refuses this, then so be it.”
