Royal nicknames: Why do Royal Family members have so many nicknames?

Nicknames are allegedly a way of relieving “family tension”, as the Royals are “not very good at communicating”. It was recently reported that Kate, Duchess of Cambridge calls Prince William “baldy” and he calls her “Duchess of Dolittle”. Meanwhile, the pair apparently called Prince George “our little grape” when Kate was pregnant.

A Royal source told The Sun: “The Royals are not very good at communicating with one another so this is one way around it.

“Nicknames are a way of taking the family tension out of things.” 

They added that the Royals also like to use them to just be silly, as they have to be quite serious in their public lives.
