When it comes to buying a rare coin online, it’s important to make sure you do your research. And, where possible, it could be worth seeking advice from a coin expert. That’s because, some coins can be listed for sale for a huge amount of money - so it’s often wise to make sure you’re all clued up before splashing out on the item. Recently, a 50p coin of the Jeremy Fisher variety was listed on eBay for a staggering starting price of £350.

The seller, who goes by the name “vrsjo”, has claimed the 50 pence is “extremely rare” as well as a “collectors item”.

Putting it up for auction, the eBay user decided to list it for £350 on the website.

There’s also a £1.40 postage fee, which the seller says includes standard delivery.

In the description, they wrote: “Extremeley Rare 50p JEREMY FISHER Coin. Dispatched with Royal Mail 1st Class Large Letter.

“Excellent condition for age. Collectors item.”(sic)

So, what is known about this coin - and how much is it really worth?

This coin was issued by the Royal Mint in 2017, as part of a celebration of the 150th anniversary of Beatrix Potter.

Designed by Emma Noble, it depicts the character Mr. Jeremy Fisher on one side.

It has a mintage of 9,700,000.

And, according to Change Checker, this coin ranks at one on the scarcity index - making it common.

While it’s up to the buyer how much they’re willing to pay, the writers behind Spend it? Save it? What should you do? have valued this design at £4.
