The address will take place at 9pm EST (2am GMT) tonight. Pipped only by Ronald Reagan, Trump’s approval rating stood at 40 percent on Monday, according to a CNN poll. This is up from a dip to 37 percent in January, during the longest government shutdown in US history.

Mr Reagan however, was hovering around 35 percent before his State of the Union address in 1883.

For comparison, George HW Bush’s approval rating at the same point in his administration was at 83 percent in 1983, John F Kennedy was at 74 percent in 1963, Dwight D Eisenhower was at 70 percent in 1955.

More recently, George W Bush was at 60 percent in 2003, Bill Clinton was standing on 47 percent in 1995 and Barack Obama was on 50 percent in 2011.
