Fans were overjoyed when 20th Century historian Roger (played by Richard Rankin) returned to his love Brianna in the Outlander season four finale last month.

It was touch and go for a while, as the Scottish character was sold to the Mohawk tribe and struggling as a slave while on the Native American tribe’s travels.

And when Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) managed to rescue him, things took an unexpected turn.

Still reeling from Young Ian’s (John Bell) decision to sacrifice himself for his family, Jamie and Claire were then taken-aback when Roger refused to go back with them to Aunt Jocasta’s (Maria Doyle Kennedy) plantation Riverrun.
