Venice, Italy is set to introduce a booking system and entry fee for tourists entering the historic city. Day-trippers to Venice will have to pay a flat rate of €3 from 1 May 2019 - with the fee increasing next year. In 2020 the sum will rise to a standard fee of €6, increasing to €8 in peak season. On the busiest days of the year, it will costs tourists €10. However, they will be charged just €3 on the quietest days.

The new rules have been launched in a bid to keep track of visitor numbers, manage the flow of tourists and make Venice “more liveable,” city mayor Mayor Luigi Brugnaro has said.

Authorities hope that by 2022 they will be able to count the number of people visiting the city and forecast when the busiest times will be so they can better manage the tourist flow.

Tourists who do not book will not be prevented access but will find entry more complicated, reported local paper Venezia Today.

Not everyone will be obliged to pay the fee, however, it just applies to day trippers.

The following will be exempt: those who live in Venice and the Veneto region, local workers, students, family members of locals, children under six, disabled people and carers, patients in healthcare facilities, those participating in sporting competitions, law enforcement, firefighters and volunteers. Future plans will see anyone born in Venice exempt from paying.
