The vote was scheduled to be held next week but has been delayed as it is thought that the Prime Minister will not have had enough time to renegotiate her Withdrawal Agreement. The delay in the vote could prompt a Cabinet split while some Remainer MPs fear a no-deal Brexit is becoming ever more likely. Chief whip Julian Smith informed Cabinet on Tuesday of the postponing of the vote which some ministers believe could make extending Article 50 inevitable.

A Cabinet minister told The Daily Telegraph: “We are not there yet with the negotiation.

"From the EU's point of view, it hasn't even started. Theresa May has not yet gone to Brussels."

The Government had been considering holding the vote the week after recess was cancelled but MPs are still expected to be on holidays.

A minister also told The Daily Telegraph that they have stopped publicly endorsing the Prime Minister’s claim that the UK will still leave the EU on March 29.
