Speaking to Express.co.uk, Mr Smith suggested the European Union is "worried at the prospect of a no deal" Brexit, resulting in unhelpful verbal attacks toward Britain. European Council President Donald Tusk on Wednesday appeared to suggest Brexiteers would be reserved a place in "hell" for not coming up with a plan for an orderly Brexit. But the Crawley MP insisted the jibe highlighted the "desperation" eurocrats feel about saving the bloc from a hard Brexit.
Mr Smith said: "Tusk hasn't helped the atmosphere.
"But the comment exposes the concern and desperation they feel as they realise they may face a no deal."
The Brexiteer politician cited less-than-stellar forecast for the economy of the Eurozone – which include Italy undergoing a recession and a shortfall in growth predictions – as potential sources of risk in the event of a Brexit no deal.
Mr Smith also appeared to dismiss claims for European Parliament Brexit coordinator Guy Verhofstadt suggesting Theresa May had reassured the bloc a backstop will be included in the final withdrawal agreement.
