Sonya (played by Eve Morey) has recently learnt the devastating truth she is living with stage-four ovarian cancer on Neighbours, news her husband Toadie (Ryan Maloney) has struggled to come to terms with.
Toadie has turned his anger to Karl Kennedy (Alan Fletcher) believing if he had picked up on the symptoms earlier, Sonya’s cancer may not have become so advanced.
The couple have confided in Toadie’s brother Shane Rebechhi (Nicholas Coghlan) and Dipi Rbecchi (Sharon Johal) recently on the Channel 5 soap, as the couple noticed Toadie was struggling to contains emotions.
However, Sonya and Toadie have been dealt another blow as troublesome Andrea (Madeleine West) has thrown another spanner in the works by applying for custody of her son Hugo.

During his trip to London a couple of years ago, Andrea managed to trick Toadie into sleeping with her, leading to the birth of Hugo, who the Neighbours icon and Sonya have been caring for since Andrea was admitted to a psychiatric facility in Tasmania.
Prior to this new twist in the Andrea plot, the schemer's mother Alice Wells (Kerry Armstrong) tried to get rid of Sonya by poisioning her and leaving her by the side of the road to die, but the mother was rescued just in time.
Seeing how the pressure of her diagnosis and Andrea’s demands are having on Toadie, Sonya decides to end her husbands suffering and goes to confront the scheming character.
The two have had a difficult relationship as Andrea has tried to split the couple up on numerous occasions, but with her health declining, Sonya decides enough is enough.
