While on Andrew Neil’s This Week, Michael Portillo corrected Alastair Campbell on a second referendum as the Remainer attempted to argue that Theresa May had thwarted it while in actuality no MP put it to the House of Commons out of fear it would not pass through Parliament. Andrew Neil questioned whether Mr Campbell was “barking up the wrong tree” when continuing to support a second referendum to which he responded that he didn’t agree. He added: “Theresa May was partly responsible for really battering the People’s vote as a concept.
“I have always felt that when the other options are looked at and when they are examined they will fall and fail in Parliament
“I suspect this attempt by Jeremy Corbyn’s Theresa May tie-up is going to fail, I could be wrong but I think it will
“Then I think the Peoples vote comes very much back into play and I suspect a lot of MPs that currently don’t support it will then.
Mr Portillo then interrupted to correct Mr Campbell’s accounts of how the second referendum bid initially failed.
