The Labour MP for Vauxhall claimed Nigel Farage’s new Brexit Party “would probably sweep the country” if it fights in future elections. The Brexit Party could potentially stand in future European elections if Brexit is delayed by the extension of Article 50. Speaking on talkRADIO, Ms Hoey said: “I think there’s no doubt that if we end up with having to contest European elections, and I don’t think the EU maybe would want that anyway, because it means all the extra MEPs that other countries were going to get, they won’t get.
“But, I think there is no doubt about it. Given how well an anti-EU party did at the last European elections.
“I think a Brexit Party specifically formed to fight the elections would probably sweep the country, whatever the leaders of both parties say.
“As long as it was a party that was actually specifically on the issue of Brexit, I think it would do extremely well.”
The Labour MP added: “The European Union elections are ignored usually by an awful lot of people. Hardly anyone knows who their MEP is.
