Jean (played by Gillian Wright) has been experiencing symptoms she and many of her fellow EastEnders characters believed to be those of the menopause. Wanting to get some clarification over her self-diagnosis, Jean paid a visit to the doctor in this evening’s instalment of the BBC soap, but the Slater matriarch was dealt with an unexpected blow. After examination, the doctor informed Jean she could be suffering from ovarian cancer but would need further tests to be 100 percent sure. Unnerved by the news, Jean returned to the Square, failing to tell her loved one the devastating prognosis she had received. Taking to Twitter, fans of the show voiced their sympathy for the character as well as their fears over the latest struggle Jean is set to face. Just as her daughter Stacey Fowler (Lacey Turner), Jean has been living with bi-polar for many years, with her introduction to the soap in 2004 highlighting the reality of the condition. Having seen Jean battle through the ups and downs of bi-polar, viewers were heartbroken to learn she is about to face yet another challenging storyline. One viewer posted: “#EastEnders Don’t let it be cancer that Jean has. She’s already been through a lot.” Another wrote: “This Jean storyline’s already breaking my heart #eastenders,” whilst a third stated: “Poor Jean... My heart… #Eastenders.” A fourth exclaimed: “Can’t cope with this Jean story! #EastEnders,” as the character tried to bury her head in the sand.
