It comes after Theresa May’s Brexit negotiator Olly Robbins was overheard saying the original plan for the Irish backstop was designed to be a “bridge” to the long-term trading relationship with the UK and EU rather than a “safety net”. Brexiteer Andrew Bridgen reacted with fury saying Britain “will be no more than a colony of the EU” after Brexit. He said the remarks proved Mrs May was planning to keep the UK in the customs union as a long term ambition for the UK’s trading relationship with Brussels.
