Theresa May is still fighting to obtain legally binding changes the controversial backstop mechanism within the withdrawal agreement from the European Union in Brexit negotiations. The European Commission has said they will not reopen the withdrawal agreement but have hinted at making changes to the future political declaration. Speaking on talkRADIO, Stanley Johnson, a former Conservative MEP, insisted the European Union will make changes to the backstop element just days before Britain is officially set to leave the Brussels bloc.
He said: “Oddly enough, both wings of my family were totally united, there was Jo on one hard and Boris on the other and both of them were totally united in opposing what was called the Government’s proposal, Mrs May’s proposal.
“Well, as it turns out, a world record vote took place in Parliament also turning it down.
“When a majority of 230 MPs voted against it so that one I think is dead in the water.
“Mrs May then torpedoed her own proposal by backing the so-called Brady amendment.”
